Leaving home or care

At home

At 16 you can leave home without your parent's permission, but there are lots of things that you should consider before making your decision.

It can be really difficult to find somewhere in an area you want and it can be hard to keep that place going. Many young people leaving home end up in difficulty, or even homeless.

Have you thought about how much rent you can afford and what about household bills? Will you be able to sacrifice your regular nights out with friends or spending less on clothes? Do you like the thought of doing your own washing and cleaning?

The Youth Information website has loads of advice about leaving home, so check it out before making your decision. And don’t forget, if you do move to a new area, register with a GP and Dentist. You can find your nearest surgery, primary care trust and nearest dentist on the NHS website.

Housing lists

If you can’t afford to live in private housing which is generally advertised in letting agencies and newspapers, the other alternative is property owned by your local housing association. But first, you need to register with them so you can be placed on a waiting list.

Leaving care

Your local authority should help prepare you for leaving care and make sure you have ongoing personal and emotional support. They should:

  • Provide advice and personal care.
  • Make sure you have an individual pathway plan including appropriate finance, accommodation, employment, educational and health related matters.
  • Review your plan regularly.
  • Make sure you have access to the Connexions service.
  • Remain in contact with you until the age of 21 (or 24 if you are still in full time education).
Take a look at the leaving local authority care section on the Youth Information website, which highlights some key points for care leavers.
