Things to do weekend jobs contentGetting a part-time job during your school or college holidays is a good way to earn some extra cash. But there are a few things you should consider before you start that application. Think about:
  • the amount of time you can dedicate to a job.
  • the maximum distance you can travel and how you can get there.
  • any existing skills or experience you have.
Although it’s nice to have money in your pocket, think about the demands it could have on your time.  If you’ve got studying to do or assignments to write you don’t want to be stressed out about how little time you have to do it because of your job.

How to find a job

As well as your local job centre, jobs are advertised in store windows. If you would like to work in a particular shop or bar, it’s always worth just asking the manager if there are likely to be opportunities coming up. You might be surprised.

You can search for jobs online on the Direct Gov website.  The site also provides useful information on how to write your curriculum vitae (CV) and how to find a job that suits you.

Employment rights

Depending on how old you are there are certain rules in place as to how many hours you can work. There are also rules in relation to minimum wage, health and safety and time off.  All this and more can be found on the employment rights section of the Direct Gov website.
