No doubt your teachers, parents and carers taught you about being aware of strangers when you were younger. But it’s important to remember that just because you’re older now, it doesn’t mean that you can forget all about being approached by people you’ve never met before. The internet
If you use internet chat rooms, don’t give personal details. After all, how do you know who you’re talking to if you can’t see them? See our pages about safe chat and safe surfing.
Mobile phones and email
Don’t respond to emails, text messages or calls from unknown numbers. If you receive abusive emails or texts you should report them to the police. Also, be aware of phone and email scams which ask for personal details. Do not respond.
Being approached in the street
If you are approached in the street by someone claiming to be a model scout, don’t go with them or give them your details. If they are genuine, they will give you a card with their contact details on and ask how old you are. If you are under 18, genuine model agencies request parental consent.
Taxis
If a car pulls up and the driver asks if you're waiting for a taxi, do not get in. Licensed private hire taxis will only go to an address if you have ordered a taxi. They do not pull over on the street like black hackney cabs.
- Always sit in the back, not next to the driver.
- Share the taxi with a friend if possible - you'll feel safer and it's cheaper.
- Don't chat to the driver. If you do talk, keep to general topics and don't give any personal information about yourself.
