Your relationship

Teens - your relationshipEvery parent wants a good relationship with their children but you may find it more difficult as they move into adolescence.

From the age of 13, your child will be developing not only physically but emotionally and mentally. Starting secondary school, adapting to a new environment and making new friends can add to the stress so it is important that you accept that your child’s behaviour may differ to what you have been used to.

Love, security and support

It is understandable that certain behaviour may cause you to react strongly, especially if your teenager puts himself at risk or does something which you don’t find acceptable.

Staying calm and rationalising situations will help you cope at these times.  This is easier said than done, especially if you constantly worry about where they are or what they are doing.  But remember that screaming and shouting at the top of your voice will only encourage them to react negatively and push you further away.
