Sexual health

Let’s talk about sex

When puberty strikes, your child’s body will grow and develop and they will become curious about sex. Some parents’ feel awkward talking about sex, but you will be surprised by how much they already know.

  • Your child may be taught sex education at school. Talking to them about this may help, and you may be able to fill in any gaps that you feel are relevant.
  • Make sure they know about STI’s and safe sex.  Pick up leaflets from your local THINK clinic, GP or health centre for them to read.
  • Discuss contraception with them and let them know you are there for them when they are ready to discuss it with a GP or sexual health clinic.

Over the years, attitudes towards relationships and sex have changed so don’t be surprised if your teenager doesn’t have the same values as you have. Supporting them in their choices will make for a better relationship.
