Fostering a child

Children - communicatingFostering is a way of providing family life for children who cannot live with their own family.

Reasons why children need temporary care may be because their parents are ill, have family problems or the child may be abused or neglected.

Often children return home once the problems have been resolved and that it is clear that their parents are able to look after them safely.  Others may stay in long-term foster care, some may be adopted, and others will move on to live independently.

Can anyone become a foster carer?

You can apply to become a foster carer regardless of gender, marital status, disability, race, culture or religion and there is no upper age limit.  You will need patience and understanding and the willingness to make a commitment to a child.

The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) has all the information you need to find out more about becoming a foster parent.
