Racism
Racism is treating someone differently just because they are a different race, colour or religion. We are not born racist but we can learn it from the people around us. Some people believe that this is normal and acceptable. But it isn’t.
Racist behaviour may include:
- Making fun of someone because of their racial, cultural or religious differences. For example, what they eat, how they dress, how they speak or the colour of their skin.
- Verbal abuse – name calling and telling racist jokes.
- Physical threats and harassment.
- Sending texts or messages on the internet.
Nobody should have to put up with racist behaviour. It’s ok to be different. It is not ok to intimidate and harass people.
If you are suffering from racist name calling or harassment, you should tell your parents and teachers and they will find ways to help you. You can also report racist incidents to the police or call the Knowsley Hate Incident Helpline on 0800 953 4433.
