National Probation Service
The probation service is committed to reducing reoffending by working with adult offenders to address the causes of crime. It works with offenders on community sentences as well as those in prison and on release. It als works with the victims of serious violent or sexual crimes. A small number of staff work in Youth Offending Teams. The aims of the National Probation Service are:
- To protect the public.
- Reduce re-offending.
- The proper punishment of offenders in the community.
- Make sure offenders are aware of the effects of crime on the victims and the public.
- Rehabilitation of offenders.
The service works in partership with many organisations, both statutory and voluntary. It is also a member of the Merseyside Criminal Justice Board which includes the police, Crown Prosecution Service, courts, prisons and probation.
