Working together to safeguard children (course code SCBWT1)

This is a mandatory multi-agency course for a variety of staff such as social workers, health visitors, Family Crime Investigation Unit (FCIU) police officers and agency child protection coordinators, as well being recommended for all practitioners who attend child protection case conferences. Course participants must have already undertaken a basic or foundation level of safeguarding training.

Learning outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of the current context of Working Together to Safeguard Children
  • Understand the safeguarding roles of parents and carers and recognise factors that can impact upon parenting
  • Develop awareness of roles and responsibilities in other agencies and understanding that each share common responsibilities
  • Extend knowledge and understanding of statutory legislation, policy, procedure and guidance
  • Understand the challenges and barriers to effective information sharing
  • Emphasise the importance of working co-operatively and collaboratively with professionals from other agencies in safeguarding children.
  • Emphasise that if this work is to be conducted successfully, participants must be aware of their personal and professional attitudes towards safeguarding children.
  • To create a safe environment in order to promote the development of trusting relationships between professional groups to enable good and effective practice within the community.
  • To understand the purpose and importance of Child Protection Plans
